Highlights

  • The dataset: Over 180,000 AI source citations underpin this analysis, produced by prompts specific to the gym and fitness industry. The AI responses from four AI models span English and six additional language markets over the course of Q2 2026.
  • 40% of citations in non-English prompts are local: Local country domains earn far more here than in globally-shopped categories.
  • 52% of Grok's citations are from user-generated domains: Reddit, Yelp, Instagram, TikTok, its single largest category.
  • ~91% of top sources differ: The highest pair (Grok and Google AI Overview) still shares only 25%.
  • 70% of Microsoft Copilot's citations are from commercial domains: Gym-chain and booking sites, making Microsoft Copilot the most commercial model by far.

Which sources should you target to get cited as a gym and fitness brand?

There is no single "AI search" to win. Each model is its own surface with its own preferred sources, and the domains that make a model's top tier reflect that model's personality:

ModelTop sourcesCitation character

Reddit is the closest thing to a universal source, it ranks #1 for both ChatGPT and Grok and appears in three of the four models' top lists, but it is absent from Microsoft Copilot's top tier entirely, where gym-chain homepages dominate. There is no domain that all four models agree on.

How have AI source rankings changed over time in the gym and fitness industry?

Splitting the ~16-week window at its midpoint (May 4) and re-ranking domains by citation volume in each half reveals real churn beneath the stable leaders. Relative rank is the reliable signal here, not raw volume.

On a relative basis, branded gym-chain sites rose while review and social aggregators fell:

The clearest narrative is a rotation from third-party discovery sources toward first-party gym-chain domains. The Gym Group, Anytime Fitness, PureGym, Fitness First, and Fitness Park all gained relative ground, while review and social aggregators lost it. Reddit held firm at #1 in both halves. We observe this shift; we do not claim a single cause, and small movements among lower-ranked domains should be read cautiously.

What type of content do AI models cite for Gyms & Fitness Centers?

Classifying every cited domain by category exposes the sharpest personality split in the dataset. Microsoft Copilot is overwhelmingly commercial, 70.2% of its citations go to gym-chain and booking sites, while Grok is the most user-generated, with 51.5% of its citations landing on reviews and social platforms.

Three distinct strategies emerge. Microsoft Copilot funnels users straight toward bookable inventory, gym homepages and membership pages. Grok and Google AI Overview lean on the crowd, citing Reddit threads, Yelp reviews, and Instagram. And ChatGPT is the only model that meaningfully cites reference material, at 18.0% versus 5% or less everywhere else. For a gym, owned brand and membership pages carry the most weight on Microsoft Copilot, while a strong presence in reviews and social communities pays off most on Grok and Google AI Overview.

Do AI models cite local-language content for Gyms & Fitness Centers?

Across the six non-English markets in scope (Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Italian), 39.6% of cited sources sit on a local country-code top-level domain, a .de, .fr, .it, .nl, .se, or .es/.mx/.ar rather than a generic .com. That is markedly higher than globally-shopped categories, and it makes intuitive sense: a gym is a physical, neighborhood purchase, so local directories, regional chains, and country-specific listings carry real weight.

This is a country-domain proxy: our citation records carry the prompt's language but not a verified language label for each source page, so we approximate "local content" by whether the cited domain ends in the market's country-code TLD. It undercounts local-language content hosted on .com domains, so treat these as a floor. French is the clear leader, local .fr domains earn more than half of all citations in French-language gym answers. Spanish sits lowest, partly because Spanish-language demand spans several markets (.es, .mx, .ar). Every language cell rests on well over 10,000 cited sources, so these rates are precise.

Which AI model relies most on local sources for Gyms & Fitness Centers?

The localization gap is driven less by the market than by the model. Microsoft Copilot relies most on local sources, 65.4% of its citations in non-English prompts land on a local country domain, because it leans on regional gym chains' own sites. Grok relies on local sources least at 26.3%, despite being by far the highest-volume model, because it pours citations into global platforms regardless of the question's language. ChatGPT (43.4%) and Google AI Overview (43.8%) sit in between.

A null cell means the model produced too few localized citations in that market to report. Google AI Overview only registered meaningful Spanish volume in this window. Every other cell rests on at least 500 cited sources. The pattern matters for international gym operators: if a target market reaches AI answers primarily through Grok, a wave of localized country-domain content will mostly go uncited. Microsoft Copilot rewards local-domain and brand-site investment far more reliably, its French behavior (87.3% local) shows just how directly it maps a country query to that country's gym chains.

Should Gyms & Fitness Centers optimize for each AI model separately?

If the four models drew from a shared notion of "the authoritative fitness sources," their top-cited lists would look alike. They do not. Comparing each model's 20 most-cited domains pairwise, the average overlap is just 9.2%, even lower than most consumer categories. The most similar pair, Grok and Google AI Overview, agrees on only 25% of its top-20; three of the six pairs share fewer than three domains.

How many sources does each AI model cite per answer?

The models also disagree on how much to cite at all. Grok cites 28.9 sources per response on average; ChatGPT cites 5.5, a 5.3× spread.

Grok's breadth is the reason it dominates raw citation counts (111,800+ cited sources, nearly twelve times ChatGPT's). For a gym, Grok offers far more "slots" per answer and therefore more chances to be cited, but those slots skew toward high-volume global reviews and social, so breadth does not automatically mean a level field.

Context

This report covers how four AI models cited web sources when answering gym and fitness-center prompts over roughly 16 weeks in 2026 (March 10 to June 29), across English and six additional language markets (Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Italian). The dataset is over 180,000 cited source records drawn from nearly 17,000 AI responses.

It describes which domains AI models cite and how that behavior differs by model, content type, language, and time. It does not measure web traffic, membership sign-ups, or human search behavior, and it is observational: we report associations and movements, not causes. "Citations" here are the sources an AI model attached to or drew on in its answer, not advertising or paid placements. Coverage varies by model and market, Google AI Overview produced enough localized volume only in the Spanish market in this window.

Methodology

How we measured this

We analyzed every cited source record for the gyms and fitness-center category over the observation window. Each record links a model's response to a specific source URL and domain, plus the prompt's language and a timestamp. For each model we ranked domains by how often they were cited, classified each domain by the type of content it hosts, and tracked how those rankings shifted between the first and second halves of the window. Cross-model overlap was measured on each pair's 20 most-cited domains (shared domains divided by the combined set). Model coverage varied across the observation window, so temporal movements are reported as relative ranks within each half.

The analysis covers over 180,000 cited sources from 16,944 AI responses. Sample sizes exceeded recommended thresholds for every reported finding. Localization is measured by a country-code-domain proxy, the source records carry the prompt's language but no verified per-page content language, so those figures are directional, are a floor rather than an exact measure, and exclude English-language prompts, which sit overwhelmingly on generic domains.

Frequently asked questions

Do different AI models really cite different sources for the same gym question?

Yes, dramatically so. Any two of the four models share only about 9% of their top-20 cited domains on average, meaning roughly nine-tenths of the sources one model relies on do not appear in another's top tier. There is no single "AI search" result to optimize for.

Which AI model should a gym brand prioritize?

It depends on what content you have. Microsoft Copilot rewards commercial and brand-direct sites (70.2% of its citations are commercial), so owned membership and brand pages matter most there. Grok and Google AI Overview lean on reviews and social (51.5% and 36.0% UGC respectively). ChatGPT uniquely values reference content (18.0%). There is no universal winner.

Does publishing in the local language help a gym in non-English markets?

More than in most categories. Across six non-English markets, 39.6% of citations go to local country domains, higher than globally-shopped industries, because gyms are a local purchase. It pays off most on Microsoft Copilot (65.4% local) and least on Grok (26.3%), and it helps most in French (52.5%) and least in Spanish (31.4%) markets.

Why does Grok cite so many more sources than ChatGPT?

Grok averages 28.9 cited sources per response versus ChatGPT's 5.5, a 5.3× difference rooted in how each model assembles answers. Grok casts a wide net across reviews and social, which is why it accounts for the majority of all citations in the dataset. More slots mean more chances to be cited, but those slots favor high-volume global platforms.

What type of content gets cited most for gyms overall?

It splits sharply by model. Commercial gym-chain sites dominate Microsoft Copilot (70.2%); user-generated reviews and social dominate Grok (51.5%) and Google AI Overview (36.0%); ChatGPT spreads across UGC (37.2%), reference (18.0%), and commercial (22.3%). Editorial coverage is a minor input everywhere, never exceeding 15%.

Did the gym source rankings actually change over the period?

Yes. Over the ~16-week window, branded gym-chain sites (The Gym Group, Anytime Fitness, PureGym, Fitness First, Fitness Park) climbed in relative rank while review and social aggregators (Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook, TimeOut) fell. We report relative rank rather than raw volume.

Is Reddit the most important source for AI gym answers?

Effectively yes for two of the four models, it ranks #1 for both Grok and ChatGPT and appears in three models' top lists. But it is absent from Microsoft Copilot's top tier, where gym-chain homepages dominate, so Reddit is influential, not universal.
