Highlights

  • The dataset: This study is an analysis of over 220,000 AI source citations using prompts specific to the management consulting industry. It analyzes AI responses from four AI models run in 12 countries over the course of Q2 2026.
  • Reddit makes up 8% of ChatGPT's citations: Its single most-cited source, well ahead of any directory.
  • No universal source: No domain is top-5 for all four models, the closest, Clutch.co, is #1 for Grok (4%) but outside ChatGPT's and Google AI Overview's top-5.
  • Five domains anchor all four models: Clutch.co, ManagementConsulted.com, Consultancy.uk, Consultancy.nl, and Consultancy.com.au.
  • 57% of Google AI Overview's citations are from commercial domains: The most brand-direct model, versus 38% for Microsoft Copilot.
  • 27% average overlap: Any two AI models share barely a quarter of their top-20 cited domains, roughly 73% of top sources differ.
  • 39% of Microsoft Copilot's citations are from editorial domains: The most press-driven profile of the four.
  • 24% of Grok's citations are from user-generated domains: The highest UGC share of any model.

Which sources should you target to get cited as a management consulting brand?

Each model's five most-cited sources, with their share of that model's total citations:

ModelTop cited sourcesCitation character

ChatGPT is the outlier at the top: Reddit is its most-cited domain by a wide margin (8.0%, nearly double its next source). Grok is the most directory-concentrated. Google AI Overview leans on case-interview prep sites and video. Track the shifting picture in the live AI visibility rankings.

How have AI source rankings changed over time in the management consulting industry?

We split the window at its midpoint (early May 2026) and ranked the top domains by their share of citations within each half rather than raw counts.

The story is a shift in citation character: global cross-industry listing directories (Sortlist, DesignRush, TheManifest, GoodFirms, F6S) gave up share, while business press (Business Insider, Il Sole 24 Ore's data desk), community and reference (Reddit, Wikipedia), and the elite firms' own domains (McKinsey, KPMG, BCG) climbed. Clutch held near the top of both halves; the anchor consulting directories stayed put, but the generalist listing sites beneath them rotated out. With a single split, we read this as a suggestive move toward press and elite-firm content rather than proof of one.

What type of content do AI models cite for management consulting?

The models differ not just on which domains but on what type of content they trust. We classified every cited domain into six categories.

Microsoft Copilot is distinctive for editorial: 39.2% of its citations go to editorial/press content, national business outlets like Il Sole 24 Ore and Forbes, the highest editorial share of the four and higher than its commercial share. ChatGPT cites the most reference content (8.4%, driven by Wikipedia). Grok is the UGC leader at 23.6%, Reddit, LinkedIn, and the large listing/review directories the registry classifies as user-generated. Google AI Overview is the most straightforwardly commercial, sending 57.2% of citations to directories, firm homepages, and for-profit case-prep sites.

Do AI models cite local-language content for management consulting?

Local sourcing varies sharply by country, and only the Northern European markets clear the halfway mark. Using the source's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) as a proxy for local-language content, we measured the share of citations pointing to a local-ccTLD source in each non-English market. Spanish-language markets were scored against their own national ccTLD (.ar.mx.es).

The Netherlands, Germany, and France lean local, reflecting strong national consulting directories and business press (Consultancy.nl, Luenendonk.de, Consultor.fr), while the Spanish-speaking markets and Sweden lean global. Because the big consulting directories (clutch.co, vault.com, managementconsulted.com) and the elite firms (mckinsey.com, deloitte.com) all live on generic TLDs, the ccTLD proxy undercounts genuinely local content published on .com, so treat these figures as a floor, not a true localization rate.

Which AI model relies most on local sources for management consulting?

Holding the market constant, the models differ sharply in how local they go. Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overview reach for local sources where Grok reaches for global aggregators.

Microsoft Copilot is the most consistently local where European business press is strong, 64–65% in German and Dutch. Google AI Overview goes furthest local in Italian and Dutch (55%, 67%). Grok is the clear globalizer: it lands at or below 40% in every language and dips to just 17% in Swedish. The country still drives localization more than the model does, but within a country Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overview reach for local sources while Grok reaches for global aggregators. (Google AI Overview produced no in-scope French citations, marked n/a.)

Should management-consulting firms optimize for each AI model separately?

Yes, the models barely agree. We built each model's ranked list of its top-20 most-cited domains and measured how much each pair holds in common for all six model pairs. The average overlap is 26.7%, with a range from 17.6% to 37.9%.

The shared domains are almost entirely the consulting directories and career-guide sites, Clutch, ManagementConsulted, the Consultancy network, Vault, CaseBasix. Everything past that thin floor diverges. A consulting firm optimizing for one AI model is still absent from roughly three-quarters of the domains the other models prefer.

How many sources does each AI model cite per answer?

The models differ enormously in how many sources they cite per answer. Grok is by far the most source-hungry; ChatGPT the most economical.

Grok cites four times as many sources per answer as ChatGPT
Mean cited sources per answer, per model, in management consulting
AEO data study of over 220,000 AI source citations in the management consulting industry (Q2 2026).Temso

Grok cites roughly 4.1x as many sources per response as ChatGPT. For a consulting firm, that cuts two ways: Grok offers far more citation slots to compete for, many of them directory listings, reachable by getting rated, but each individual citation carries proportionally less weight. ChatGPT cites few sources, so earning one of its six is both harder and more valuable, and its heavy tilt toward Reddit and press means the path in runs through community discussion and earned media rather than directory listings.

Context

This analysis draws from Temso's AI visibility monitoring platform, which tracks how brands appear in AI model responses across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, xAI's Grok, and Google AI Overview. The dataset covers management-consulting prompts across 12 markets (Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and seven languages over roughly sixteen weeks (10 March to 29 June 2026).

It measures which sources AI models cite, not which firms or services are best. A high citation share means a domain is frequently surfaced by a model, not that it is authoritative or accurate. Grok contributes the largest share of citations in this dataset.

Methodology

How we measured this

We analyzed every AI response and its cited sources for the management-consulting category over the observation window: 22,182 responses and over 220,000 cited source citations. A "citation" is a web source a model explicitly surfaced in support of an answer; we count only sources flagged as cited. For each model we ranked domains by citation count and reported the top five with their share. Cross-model overlap was measured by comparing each pair's top-20 most-cited domains. Every cited domain was classified by content type using a global domain registry. Localization used each source's country-code top-level domain as a proxy for local-language sourcing across the non-English markets, and temporal analysis split the observation period at its midpoint, ranking domains by within-half citation share in each half. Model coverage varied across the observation window, so temporal movements are reported as relative ranks within each half.

The ccTLD proxy approximates but does not equal true source language, and undercounts local content on .com domains, a meaningful caveat in a directory- and firm-heavy category where the biggest sources sit on generic TLDs. The two-proportion test on overlap pairs was non-significant (z = 1.81, p = 0.07), so we describe all four models as similarly low-overlap rather than ranking the pairs. Sample sizes exceeded recommended thresholds for every reported finding.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI models cite different sources for management-consulting questions?

Yes, mostly. Any two models share only about 27% of their top-20 most-cited domains on average, so roughly three-quarters of the sources one model relies on are absent from another's top tier. The common ground is a small set of consulting directories and career-guide sites, Clutch, ManagementConsulted, the Consultancy network.

Is there one source that matters most across every model?

No, and that is the notable part. Management consulting has no domain in the top five of all four models. The closest is Clutch.co, which is Grok's #1 (4.0%) and top-5 for Microsoft Copilot but falls outside ChatGPT's and Google AI Overview's top five. Five domains appear in all four top-20 lists: Clutch, ManagementConsulted, Consultancy.uk, Consultancy.nl, and Consultancy.com.au.

Which sources does each model favor beyond the directories?

They diverge sharply. ChatGPT leans on community and press, Reddit is its #1 by a wide margin (8.0%). Grok floods answers with directories and consulting-career sites. Microsoft Copilot is the most press-driven, sending 39.2% of citations to editorial outlets. Google AI Overview mixes case-prep sites, directories, and the elite firms' own domains.

Does language matter for getting cited in management consulting?

Yes, but it varies widely by country. In the Netherlands, Germany, and France, 41–52% of citations go to local-ccTLD sources; in Argentina, Sweden, and the Spanish-speaking markets, only about 21–31% do. Because the dominant directories and elite firms live on .com domains, even local-language prompts often land on global sites.

Which AI model relies most on local sources for management consulting?

Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overview. Microsoft Copilot reaches 64–65% local-ccTLD rates in German and Dutch, and Google AI Overview reaches 55–67% in Italian and Dutch. Grok is the opposite, it stays on global directories and career sites, dipping to just 17% local in Swedish.

Which model cites the most sources per answer?

Grok, by a wide margin, about 26 cited sources per response, roughly 4.1 times ChatGPT's 6.4, with Google AI Overview at 10.6 and Microsoft Copilot at 7.7. More sources mean more directory-listing slots to compete for in Grok, while ChatGPT's few slots are harder to win and skew toward Reddit and business press.

Did the sources AI models cite change over the period?

Yes, they rotated underneath the anchor directories. Clutch held near the top throughout, but in the second half generalist listing directories like Sortlist, DesignRush, TheManifest, and GoodFirms lost share while business press (Business Insider, Il Sole 24 Ore), community and reference (Reddit, Wikipedia), and the elite firms' own domains (McKinsey, KPMG, BCG) climbed.

What should a management-consulting firm do with this?

Cover the directories, then optimize per model, there is no single silver-bullet source. Getting listed and well-rated on Clutch, ManagementConsulted, and the national Consultancy sites is table stakes across all four systems. After that, treat each model as a separate channel: community and earned media for ChatGPT, national business press for Microsoft Copilot, case-prep visibility and a strong firm site for Google AI Overview, and directory coverage for Grok.
