Highlights
- The dataset: The analysis behind this study covers over 210,000 AI source citations from prompts specific to the payment processing industry, with AI responses from four AI models run in 12 countries during Q2 2026.
- Reddit alone makes up 17% of ChatGPT's citations: That makes ChatGPT the most concentrated engine.
- 68% of Google AI Overview's citations are from commercial domains: Google AI Overview is the most vendor-centric engine.
- ~79% of top sources differ: Any two of the four models share only about a fifth of their top-20 cited payment domains.
- 52% local rate for Microsoft Copilot: The most localized engine, with Grok trailing at 28%.
Which sources should you target to get cited as a payment processing brand?
Each model has its own anchor among its most-cited domains.
| Model | Top cited domains (share of that model's citations) |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | reddit.com (16.7%), techradar.com (2.8%), paymentgateway.ca (2.7%), stripe.com (2.6%), talo.com.ar (2.3%) |
| Grok | youtube.com (3.7%), stripe.com (2.9%), reddit.com (2.8%), wise.com (2.8%), airwallex.com (2.3%) |
| Google AI Overview | airwallex.com (4.3%), wise.com (3.7%), stripe.com (3.5%), youtube.com (3.4%), shopify.com (3.1%) |
| Microsoft Copilot | clearlypayments.com (4.2%), airwallex.com (2.8%), statrys.com (2.8%), ehlist.ca (2.4%), trusted.de (2.4%) |
A payments brand optimizing for one AI model is, on average, absent from ~79% of the domains the other models prefer. Winning in Grok is no guarantee of being seen in Microsoft Copilot. Track each engine in the live AI visibility rankings.
How have AI source rankings changed over time in the payment processing industry?
We split the ~110-day window at its midpoint (early May 2026) and re-ranked the most-cited domains in each half. The ranking-movement analysis below covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and Microsoft Copilot, ranking domains by their share of citations within each half.
On that cleaner basis, the reshuffle is real. Reddit surged from #19 to #1 (its share up roughly 8x) as the engines leaned harder on community discussion in the back half. TechRadar (#30 to #14) and Argentina's talo.com.ar (#28 to #6) also climbed sharply. On the way down, wowa.ca fell 19 places, and YouTube slid from #3 to #11 even with Grok removed, a genuine cooling of video citations. The payments source leaderboard is volatile enough that a brand's AI visibility can swing materially in a matter of weeks.
What type of content do AI models cite for payment processors?
We classified every cited domain by category. Commercial content (processor and fintech vendor domains) dominates every model, but the mix beyond that splits the field cleanly.
Three behaviors stand out. Google AI Overview is the most vendor-centric engine, sending more than two-thirds of its citations straight to commercial payments sites. Microsoft Copilot is the most editorial, with 24.6% of its citations going to press and review media, and it is the only model that meaningfully cites reference material (9.9%, vs 2–7% elsewhere). ChatGPT is the community engine, 21.3% of its citations are user-generated content, mostly Reddit, roughly triple the UGC rate of Google AI Overview or Microsoft Copilot.
Google AI Overview visibility runs through your own vendor and comparison pages; Microsoft Copilot visibility runs through earned press and directory coverage; ChatGPT visibility runs, uncomfortably, through Reddit.
Do AI models cite local-language content for payment processors?
Across the eight non-English country markets (Spanish in Spain, Mexico, and Argentina; German; French; Italian; Dutch; Swedish), local-country-domain citations make up about 35% of all citations, meaning roughly two-thirds of sources in non-English markets still sit on global or English-language domains. Local sourcing varies sharply by market.
Sweden and Germany pull in the most local content; Spain leans hardest on global domains, with only about one citation in six landing on a local .es domain, the lowest local rate of any market in the study. The three Spanish-speaking markets diverge widely (36% in Argentina down to 16% in Spain), so "Spanish" is not a single behavior.
Which AI model relies most on local sources for payment processors?
Microsoft Copilot is by far the most localized engine, with 52.3% of its citations in non-English prompts on local domains, and it leads in every single language. Grok is the most global, localizing only 28.3% of the time despite citing the most sources overall. ChatGPT and Google AI Overview sit in between.
Microsoft Copilot's German (69%) and Swedish (72%) localization rates are the highest single cells in the matrix. ChatGPT's Italian (20%) and Grok's Dutch (20%) are the lowest. The lesson for a processor in a non-English market: a strong local-language presence is far more likely to be picked up by Microsoft Copilot than by Grok.
Localization here is measured by whether the cited domain uses the market's own country code (.de.fr.it.nl.se, and .es/.mx/.ar for the Spanish markets), not by detecting the actual language of the page, so the figures are a directional lower bound on true local-language sourcing. Google AI Overview had no French citations in scope and is shown as n/a.
Should payment processors optimize for each AI model separately?
The headline finding is divergence, so yes. We took each model's 20 most-cited domains and measured, for each pair, the share of domains the two lists hold in common out of all domains they mention between them. The average across all six model pairs is just 20.8%, which means about 79% of the domains one model relies on are absent from any given other model's top tier.
The overlap is lopsided. Grok and Google AI Overview share 43% of their top domains, both lean on the same global fintech names (Stripe, Wise, Airwallex, Shopify) plus YouTube and Reddit. But every pairing involving Microsoft Copilot slides to 11–14%. Microsoft Copilot is the outlier: its top-20 is dominated by niche processor-comparison sites and localized directories (ClearlyPayments, Statrys, trusted.de, ehlist.ca), sharing only four or five domains with any other engine.
How many sources does each AI model cite per answer?
The four engines differ by roughly four-fold in how many sources they cite in a single answer.
Grok cites roughly 3.9x as many sources per response as Microsoft Copilot, with Google AI Overview ahead of ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot in the middle. Practically, Grok offers many more "slots" for a brand to appear in any given answer, while Microsoft Copilot's short citation lists make each slot far more competitive.
Context
This analysis draws from Temso's AI visibility monitoring platform, which tracks how brands appear in AI model responses across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, and Google AI Overview. The dataset covers payment processors prompts across 12 country markets and 7 languages over roughly 110 days (March 10 to June 29, 2026), comprising 22,130 AI responses and over 210,000 cited source links.
It measures what AI models cite, not the underlying quality of any payments brand. Citation share is a visibility signal, not a quality judgment, and these findings reflect citation behavior for payment processors prompts in the monitored markets. They may not generalize to all brands, prompt types, or other verticals.
Methodology
How we measured this
We collected the source links cited by four AI engines as they answered a fixed set of payment processors prompts, repeated across 12 country markets (US, GB, CA, AU, DE, FR, IT, NL, SE, ES, MX, AR) and 7 languages over a 110-day window. Each cited link was attributed to its publishing domain, and each domain was classified by type using a global registry. Cross-model overlap was measured on each model pair's top-20 most-cited domains, the share of domains two models hold in common relative to all the domains they mention between them. The temporal analysis split the window at its midpoint and compared domain rankings in each half.
The analysis covers over 210,000 cited sources from 22,130 AI responses; sample sizes exceeded recommended thresholds for every reported finding. Localization is measured by a country-code-domain proxy (the source records carry no detected content language), so those figures are directional and exclude English-language prompts, which sit overwhelmingly on generic domains. Model coverage varied across the observation window, so the ranking-movement comparison is reported as relative ranks within each half. Per-model × language cells with fewer than 30 citations are reported as n/a. All findings are observational and describe correlation, not causation.
Frequently asked questions
Do different AI models cite the same sources for payment processors questions?
No, barely. Any two models share only about 21% of their top-20 most-cited domains on average, so roughly 79% of the sources one engine relies on are absent from another's top tier. The only meaningful agreement is between Grok and Google AI Overview, which share 43%; Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT share just 11%.
Which AI model should a payments brand optimize for?
It depends on the content you can produce. Google AI Overview rewards your own vendor and comparison pages (68% commercial citations). Microsoft Copilot rewards earned press and directory coverage (25% editorial, plus reference material). ChatGPT rewards community presence, nearly 17% of its citations go to Reddit alone. Because the models overlap so little, no single source strategy wins everywhere.
Which model cites the most sources per answer?
Grok, by a wide margin, about 26 sources per response, versus roughly 11 for Google AI Overview and about 7 for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. That near-4x spread means Grok answers offer many more openings for a brand to appear.
Which AI engine is best for non-English payments markets?
Microsoft Copilot. It relies on local sources the most, citing local-country domains 52% of the time in non-English markets and leading in every language tested. Grok is the least localized at 28%, defaulting to global and English-language sources.
Which payments sources are gaining ground in AI answers?
Community discussion and localized comparison content. Reddit moved to the top spot among ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and Microsoft Copilot, and TechRadar and Argentina's talo.com.ar both climbed 15+ places over the window. General video (YouTube) and some directory sites went the other way.
Do AI source rankings for payment processors change much over time?
Yes. Over roughly four months the leaderboard reshuffled substantially, with several domains moving 10+ ranks in either direction. AI visibility in this category is not stable, it can swing materially within weeks.
What types of content get cited most for payment processors?
Commercial vendor sites lead across every model, from 51% (ChatGPT) up to 68% (Google AI Overview). Beyond that, the models diverge: Microsoft Copilot favors editorial press and uniquely leans on reference material (10%), ChatGPT is heavily community-driven (21% user-generated content, mostly Reddit), and Google AI Overview is the most purely vendor-centric.
How reliable are these localization numbers?
They are directional. Localization is measured by whether a cited domain uses the local country code (.de.fr.nl, etc.), not by detecting the page's actual language. A local-language article on a .com domain is not counted, so the true local-language sourcing rate is somewhat higher than reported.
