Google AI Overviews
Updated on Sep 02, 2026
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, offering quick answers without requiring users to click through to websites.
Definition
Google AI Overviews launched in May 2024, at Google I/O, as a general rollout in the United States. They grew out of the Search Generative Experience (SGE), the experimental version Google announced at I/O in May 2023 and kept behind a Search Labs waitlist for a year. The two are often conflated: SGE was the 2023 opt-in beta, AI Overviews is the 2024 product that replaced it.
Instead of showing only the familiar list of blue links, AI Overviews present a synthesized Response at the top of the results page. These summaries are designed to give users quick, natural language answers without requiring them to click through multiple websites.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same thing
AI Overviews is a block inside an otherwise normal results page: you search, and a summary appears above the links. AI Mode is a separate, conversational surface where the whole result is a generated answer you can ask follow-up questions in, with no blue-link page underneath.
Google launched AI Mode in 2025. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users within roughly a year of launch, with queries more than doubling every quarter, available in close to 200 countries and 98 languages.
The distinction matters for measurement. A brand can be cited constantly in AI Overviews and be invisible in AI Mode, or the reverse, because the two surfaces retrieve and summarize independently. Tracking only one leaves half the picture.
How sources work in an Overview
AI Overviews typically include a mix of Cited Sources and Inline Sources. Cited Sources provide attribution and transparency, while Inline Sources give users clickable entry points inside the text. Behind these are the Source Domains that supply the content used by the AI. This combination makes AI Overviews one of the most influential formats for Brand Visibility in search today.
For marketers and agencies, Google AI Overviews are critical because they represent the front door of online discovery. If a brand appears prominently in an Overview, it signals authority and relevance in Google's ecosystem. If absent, it suggests competitors may be shaping category narratives and capturing Share of Voice.
