Ahrefs is a platform built for the SEO era. It remains a strong choice for teams that depend on backlink, keyword, competitor, and technical SEO data every week. Its newer AI visibility features extend that SEO suite, but they do not make Ahrefs an AEO-first platform.

The two biggest drawbacks are cost and the AEO experience. Ahrefs pricing runs from $29 to $1,499 per month before tax, extra users, add-ons, and optional products. Its AI-search capabilities have lagged behind specialist AEO platforms, and they can feel crowded inside a product packed with SEO tools. Shortlist Ahrefs for deep SEO research. If AI-search visibility is the priority, compare its prompt tracking, citation analysis, competitor perception, and execution workflows with an AEO-native platform before you buy.

What is Ahrefs? A broad SEO platform with a data-first edge

Ahrefs is an SEO and marketing platform for keyword research, competitor analysis, technical auditing, rank tracking, backlink analysis, content research, and AI visibility monitoring.

According to the Ahrefs FAQ, its core products include Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Content Explorer, and Brand Radar. Together, these tools help you research demand, inspect competitors, diagnose website problems, and monitor organic performance.

Ahrefs makes the strongest commercial case when your team uses its data frequently. An agency researching backlinks for 20 clients can spread the subscription cost across active accounts. A small company checking one website once a month may struggle to justify the same expense.

Database sizes, crawler performance, and index coverage are vendor-reported. Treat them as useful indicators of scope, then test the data against your market and first-party analytics.

The core Ahrefs tools cover recurring SEO work

Ahrefs brings the main SEO research and monitoring jobs into one platform, with particular depth in backlinks, keywords, competitor pages, and technical diagnostics.

Site Explorer shows backlinks, estimated organic traffic, paid traffic, site structure, and top-performing pages for a domain.

That combination supports practical agency work. You can review a prospect’s declining pages before a sales call, compare referring domains across competitors, or find pages that attract links in a client’s category.

Organic traffic figures remain estimates. Compare them with first-party analytics before using them in forecasts, budgets, or executive reports.

Keywords Explorer turns demand into content priorities

Keywords Explorer provides keyword ideas, search volume, difficulty, traffic potential, and clustering across multiple search engines.

Ahrefs reports 28.7 billion filtered keywords drawn from a 110-billion-keyword database. Those are vendor figures, but the real buying question is simpler: does the tool return enough relevant queries, accurate search engine results pages, and useful grouping for your market?

Use the metrics to compare opportunities. A lower-volume topic with clearer intent and realistic ranking difficulty may deserve priority over a broad term with higher reported volume.

Site Audit identifies technical problems at scale

Site Audit crawls a website, groups technical and on-page issues, recommends fixes, and calculates a Health Score.

The Ahrefs Site Audit page says the crawler checks more than 170 issues and can execute JavaScript. That makes the tool useful for finding broken links, indexability problems, duplicate content, and other crawl-level patterns.

Automated findings still need review. A crawler can flag an intentional configuration or miss the commercial reason one template matters more than another. Validate each priority against website intent, technical constraints, and business impact.

Rank Tracker and Content Explorer support monitoring and promotion

Rank Tracker monitors desktop and mobile positions across more than 190 countries and regions. Its Share of Voice reporting helps you compare search visibility with named competitors.

Content Explorer helps find high-performing pages, brand mentions, and link prospects. Ahrefs reports an index of 16.9 billion pages for the product. The current capability and index claims appear in the Ahrefs tools directory.

Ahrefs pricing starts at $29, but serious workflows cost more

Ahrefs offers five monthly plans, with higher tiers adding capacity, data access, controls, and automation.

The Ahrefs pricing page displayed these monthly prices in September 2026:

  • Starter: $29 per month
  • Lite: $129 per month
  • Standard: $249 per month
  • Advanced: $449 per month
  • Enterprise: $1,499 per month

Prices are in US dollars and exclude applicable tax. Ahrefs positions Lite for small businesses and personal projects, Standard for freelance SEOs and consultants, Advanced for lean in-house teams, and Enterprise for larger organizations.

Paid plans include one user. Allowances for projects, tracked keywords, exports, historical data, API units, additional users, and access controls vary by tier.

Starter and Lite use fixed monthly credits. Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise use an unlimited-credit model subject to fair-use restrictions. Optional products and add-ons, including Content Kit, Report Builder, Project Boost, and custom Brand Radar prompt packages, can raise the total.

Annual billing can save up to 17%, depending on the configuration. Agencies should calculate cost per active client or project instead of comparing headline prices alone.

Ahrefs Free works best for websites you own

Ahrefs Free is a permanent limited account with no credit card required. It gives you useful diagnostics for verified websites, while competitor research remains restricted.

The Ahrefs Free account includes six tools:

  • Site Explorer
  • Site Audit
  • Web Analytics
  • Social Media Manager
  • AI Content Helper
  • SEO Toolbar

Site Explorer, Site Audit, and Web Analytics require website ownership verification. The other listed tools can be used without verifying a property.

Displayed allowances include 5,000 Site Audit crawl credits per verified project each month, up to 1,000 visible backlinks and keywords, 1 million Web Analytics events per project, and one AI Content Helper document per month.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools now operates under the Ahrefs Free name. Its original functions remain focused on Web Analytics, Site Audit, and Site Explorer for verified properties. You can add an unlimited number of verified websites.

Ownership is the real free-to-paid boundary. The free account helps you investigate your own properties. Paid access opens broader analysis of unverified websites, including competitors. That makes Ahrefs Free useful for diagnosis, but it does not function as a complete trial of a paid competitor-research workflow.

Ahrefs AI extends an SEO platform into AEO

Ahrefs has added content assistance, conversational data access, and AI visibility monitoring to a platform designed around traditional SEO. These features broaden the suite, but the AEO experience has lagged behind specialist platforms and can be hard to find among the many SEO reports and workflows.

AI Content Helper compares a draft with top-ranking pages, identifies core topics, scores topical coverage, and suggests gaps. A built-in AI chat supports feedback and ideation. This remains an SEO-led content workflow. Teams still need to validate claims, edit the draft, and manage publishing.

Ask Ahrefs provides a conversational way to query platform data and move through reports. That can save time when you need a specific answer without opening several screens. Conversational access does not remove the need to understand how Ahrefs calculates the underlying metrics.

Brand Radar measures mentions, citations, AI Share of Voice, and estimated impressions across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. Its AI Visibility Index converts queries from the Ahrefs keyword database into natural-language prompts, runs them through AI platforms, and stores the responses.

That search-derived methodology reflects Ahrefs’ SEO roots. The pre-collected index provides immediate category research, while Custom Prompts begin collecting specific buyer questions after setup. Custom Prompts also support Claude.

Ahrefs says its pre-collected index works best for established brands or topics with meaningful search demand. Smaller or niche brands may therefore need custom prompt tracking. A large existing index can still underrepresent the exact questions that drive a specialist purchase.

Feature access varies by subscription and add-on. That creates added cost and complexity for teams primarily interested in AEO. Review the current details on the Ahrefs AI and Brand Radar pages before choosing a plan.

The Ahrefs API supports reporting within defined limits

Ahrefs API v3 can bring selected platform data into internal dashboards, client reports, and automated workflows.

The Ahrefs API documentation lists data from Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, SERP Overview, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Batch Analysis, Brand Radar, Social Media Management, and Content Helper. Selected project and list-management operations are also available.

Eligible paid plans receive monthly API units. Other plans retain limited free test queries. Most chargeable requests consume units based on returned rows and requested fields, with a documented minimum cost of 50 units per request.

The default limit is 60 requests per minute. Dynamic throttling can also return HTTP 429 responses. Before buying a plan for API access, model endpoint coverage, returned fields, included units, overage eligibility, and expected query design.

Ahrefs reviews confirm SEO strength, cost friction, and AEO gaps

Ahrefs reviews consistently praise its backlink, keyword, and competitor data. Pricing, credits, and workflow limitations appear repeatedly among the drawbacks. Reviews focused on Brand Radar add a second set of concerns: incomplete AI-search coverage, search-derived measurement, limited actionability, and weak agency reporting workflows.

At retrieval, G2 displayed a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 713 reviews. Its AI analysis, dated May 2026, identified positive themes around backlink data, keyword research, actionable insights, and interface usability.

Reported concerns included high cost, rank tracking that some users found less flexible than competing products, and traffic estimates that did not match first-party analytics.

A September 2025 G2 editorial analysis reported that 77% of reviewers had given Ahrefs five stars at the time. The article also selected one agency user’s criticism: “The credit system is not ideal for agency users.”

Negative AEO reviews are more specific:

  • A February 2026 review by AEO consultant Connor Kimball said Brand Radar sometimes struggled to distinguish a brand mention from a verifiable, clickable citation. It also flagged limited indexed model coverage, extra charges for custom prompt tracking, no AI crawler analytics, and restricted API access as weaknesses for serious AEO work.
  • A 2026 Rankability agency review described Brand Radar as an exploratory research database rather than a repeatable multi-client tracker. Its main criticisms were sampled coverage, no built-in optimization workflow, and no white-label or multi-client reporting layer.

Ahrefs belongs on an enterprise SEO shortlist

Ahrefs is a credible enterprise SEO candidate, but larger organizations should test governance and service requirements separately from data depth.

At retrieval, Gartner Peer Insights showed Ahrefs with a 4.6 out of 5 rating from 79 ratings. Gartner’s category also included Semrush, BrightEdge, and Conductor.

The best enterprise SEO tools decision depends on more than backlink and keyword coverage. Evaluate:

  • Workflow management and approval controls
  • User permissions and governance
  • Integrations and API capacity
  • Reporting across teams, markets, and brands
  • Support and service requirements
  • Automation and AI-search measurement

Category inclusion does not establish a universal winner. Ahrefs may provide the research depth you need while another platform fits your organization’s reporting or governance model better.

Ahrefs data needs context before it becomes a decision

Ahrefs metrics are inputs for decisions, not substitutes for validation.

Compare estimated traffic with first-party analytics. Check reported rankings against the locations and devices that matter. Review Site Audit findings against intentional website behavior. Include extra users, optional products, exports, and API consumption in the real cost.

One brand mention does not prove stable visibility. A mention also does not reveal the total audience, whether someone read the answer, or whether the appearance influenced revenue.

Ahrefs was built for SEO. Temso was built for AEO

Ahrefs is strongest at the work that defined the SEO era: keyword demand, backlinks, rankings, technical health, and competitor-page research. Its AI-search features sit inside that much larger SEO platform. For teams focused on AEO, the experience can feel crowded and less mature than a purpose-built product.

Temso starts with how brands appear, rank, and get cited in live AI-generated answers. That focus matters as discovery moves beyond blue links and clicks. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) require you to examine recommendations, cited sources, brand attributes, and competitor perception across AI systems.

Temso tracks prompts, rendered responses, brand mentions, cited pages, visibility, rank, and competitor performance across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Grok, and Microsoft Copilot. Repeated runs and controlled conditions help separate a one-off response from a stable visibility pattern.

For lean teams, the operational layer matters too. Temso’s AI agent drafts content, prioritizes fixes, and executes work within team-defined guardrails. Choose Ahrefs when deep SEO research is the main job. Choose an AEO-native platform such as Temso when AI visibility, citation strategy, competitor perception, and action are the priority.

Use a one-week proof before committing to Ahrefs

Start with a seven-day buying test tied to real work.

Day 1: Verify your website in Ahrefs Free. Run Site Audit, inspect visible backlinks and keywords, and review Web Analytics. Record every task blocked by ownership restrictions, usage limits, or unavailable competitor data.

Week 1: Test the paid jobs that matter most. Research competitor backlinks, build a keyword set, check known rankings, run an audit, export data, and produce one client or management report. Compare Ahrefs estimates with first-party analytics.

Before purchase: Calculate the required users, projects, tracked keywords, exports, API units, historical data, and add-ons. Then define your AI-search requirements, including custom prompts, repeated measurements, citation analysis, competitor perception, and execution. Do not assume an expensive SEO suite will also deliver the strongest AEO workflow.

Establish a Temso AI-search visibility baseline alongside the Ahrefs test. You will finish the week knowing whether you need Ahrefs for SEO, an AEO-native platform for AI discovery, or both. You will also see the real cost and where your brand is missing from AI-generated answers.
