Highlights

  • The dataset: This report draws on over 450,000 AI source citations, collected with prompts specific to the private K-12 education sector. The underlying AI responses, from four AI models, were gathered in 12 countries throughout Q2 2026.
  • Reddit climbed from #6 to #1 in the window: The clearest riser in the second half of the window.
  • Reddit alone makes up 10% of ChatGPT's citations: That makes ChatGPT the most concentrated model.
  • 84% of Dutch and Swedish citations are local: The most localized markets, with Google AI Overview reaching 95% on Dutch prompts.
  • ~17% average overlap between any two models: More than four in five of each model's top-20 cited private-school domains differ from another's.

Which sources should you target to get cited as a private K-12 school?

Each model's top-cited domains tell their own story.

ModelTop sourcesCitation character

The school directory niche.com is the nearest thing to common ground, it appears in every model's top five, but its weight is modest everywhere (1.7–3.6%). Beyond it the models split hard: Reddit is ChatGPT's runaway favorite, social platforms dominate Grok and Google AI Overview, and Microsoft Copilot leans on local-market directories like micole.net (Spain) and schulen.de (Germany).

How have AI source rankings changed over time in the private K-12 education sector?

We split the observation window at its midpoint (early May 2026) and compared the most-cited domains in each half. The ranking is far from static.

The rise of Reddit and the German directory schulen.de is the strongest relative-ranking signal in the window; we read the slide of the social platforms as directional rather than proof they lost favor across all models. Track them in the live AI visibility rankings.

What type of content do AI models cite for private schools?

The models differ not just on which domains but on what type of content they trust. We classified every cited source into content categories.

ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are the reference-leaning engines: editorial plus reference content accounts for roughly half of their citations, and they cite the least commercial content. Google AI Overview is the most commercial, sending 28% of its citations to commercial domains and almost never reaching for reference material (8%). Grok is the most institutional and social, with the highest share of schools' own pages and user-generated content.

Do AI models cite local-language content for private schools?

Outside English-speaking markets, models cite local-country domains far more than they do for many other sectors. Using country-code top-level domains as a proxy for local-language sourcing, the local-domain citation rate ranges from 84% (Dutch and Swedish) down to 38% (Spanish). English prompts are excluded, English content overwhelmingly lives on generic domains.

Spanish sits far below the rest for a mechanical reason: Spanish-language prompts span Spain, Mexico, and Argentina, so a single ".es" test misses the majority of legitimate local content on .com.mx.com.ar, and generic domains. In the single-country markets, private-school discovery is a genuinely local-web affair.

Which AI model relies most on local sources for private schools?

The localization gap between models is smaller here than in some sectors, every model leans heavily on local sources in single-country markets, but Google AI Overview and Microsoft Copilot lead, while Grok trails in Spanish and German.

Google AI Overview reaches 95–98% local domains on Dutch and Swedish prompts, the highest of any model-language pairing, and Microsoft Copilot hits 93% in German. Grok relies on local sources least in German (62%) and Spanish (36%), leaning more on international directories. Google AI Overview produced too few French-prompt school citations to report a stable rate. For a school competing in Germany, the Netherlands, or Sweden, local-language web presence pays off across nearly every model.

Should private schools optimize for each AI model separately?

Yes, almost entirely. When the four models answer the same private-school questions, their top-cited domains barely converge. We compared the 20 most-cited domains for each model and measured how much they share.

ChatGPT is the odd one out, it shares only about a tenth of its top sources with any other model, because it leans so hard on Reddit and Wikipedia while the others reach for social platforms and directories. Optimizing for one model's citation surface leaves a school largely invisible on the others.

How many sources does each AI model cite per answer?

The models disagree even on how many sources to cite per answer.

Context

This analysis draws from Temso's AI visibility monitoring platform, which tracks how brands appear in AI model responses across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, and Google AI Overview. The dataset covers private-school-related prompts ("best private schools in [country]") across 12 countries and 7 languages over roughly sixteen weeks (March–June 2026).

It measures what AI models cite, not the underlying quality of any school. These findings reflect citation behavior for private-school-related prompts in the monitored markets, and may not generalize to all institutions, prompt types, or other industry verticals.

Methodology

How we measured this

We tracked four AI models responding to private-school prompts in local languages across 12 countries. Each response was parsed to extract source citations: the URLs, domains, and metadata referenced. Domain categories (editorial, commercial, UGC, reference, institutional) were assigned from a global domain registry. Cross-model overlap was measured using Jaccard similarity on each model pair's top-20 most-cited domains. Temporal analysis split the observation period at its midpoint and compared domain rankings in each half.

The analysis covers over 450,000 cited sources from 41,626 AI responses. Sample sizes exceeded recommended thresholds for every reported finding. Localization is measured by a country-code-domain proxy (the source records carry no detected content language), so those figures are directional and exclude English-language prompts, which sit overwhelmingly on generic domains. Spanish is especially conservative because it spans three countries. Model coverage varied across the observation window, so relative rank gains within each half (Reddit, schulen.de) are the more reliable signal.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI models cite different sources for private-school recommendations?

Yes, substantially. Any two of the four models share only about 17% of their top-20 cited school domains, so more than four in five sources differ between models. ChatGPT overlaps least with the others, sharing only about a tenth of its top sources with any single model.

Which AI model cites the most sources per answer for private schools?

Grok, by a wide margin, about 30 cited sources per answer, versus roughly 11 for Google AI Overview, 8 for Microsoft Copilot, and 6 for ChatGPT. That is a nearly 5x gap between the most and least source-hungry models.

What kinds of websites do AI models cite for private schools?

It varies by model. ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot lean on editorial and reference content (roughly half their citations combined); Google AI Overview is the most commercial (28%) and rarely cites reference material; Grok is the most institutional and social, citing schools' own pages and user-generated content most often.

Do private schools need local-language web content for AI visibility?

Yes, in most markets. Outside English, every model cites local-country domains for a majority of answers in single-country markets, 84% on Dutch and Swedish prompts, 71% in German. Local-language web presence is close to mandatory for visibility in these markets, not an optional extra.

Which AI model relies most on local sources for private schools?

Google AI Overview and Microsoft Copilot lead. Google AI Overview reaches 95–98% local domains on Dutch and Swedish prompts, and Microsoft Copilot hits 93% in German. Grok relies on local sources least in Spanish (36%) and German (62%), leaning more on international directories.

How fast do AI private-school source rankings change?

Quickly. Over a roughly sixteen-week window, Reddit climbed from the 6th to the most-cited domain and the German directory schulen.de rose from #9 to #4. The slide of Facebook and Instagram is a relative-rank movement we read as directional rather than a proven preference shift.

Is one AI ranking enough to optimize for in private education?

No. Because the models share only about 17% of their top sources and weight them very differently, visibility on one model does not transfer to the others. An AI-visibility strategy for private schools has to be built model by model, and, outside English, language by language.
